Hilliard named new Head Men's Basketball Coach at MassBay

The MassBay Community College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that Darryl Hilliard has been named as the Buccaneers new Head Men’s Basketball Coach.

Hilliard, a coaching veteran with over 30 years of experience, has worked at all levels of college and high school basketball during his career. Coach Hilliard has served as an NCAA D1 assistant men’s basketball Coach at Boston University, Northeastern University, University of New Hampshire, College of the Holy Cross, and the University of Delaware. He has also worked as an assistant at D2 St. Michael’s College, and was the women’s basketball head coach at D3 UMass Boston.

In addition to his time at the college level, Hilliard also served as the head varsity basketball coach at New Mission High School, Snowden High School and Fenway High School in Boston as well as several California high schools during the 12 years that he lived in Los Angeles.

“I would like to thank MassBay for giving me this opportunity,” said Hilliard. “There are many former players and coaches who take pride in this program from their past successes. My commitment is to honor that tradition while giving our current student-athletes the best possible experience both on and off the court.”

“I am beyond excited that Coach Hilliard has agreed to become our new head basketball coach,” commented Director of Athletics, Recreation and Wellness Adam Nelson. “Our paths crossed many times while I was coaching, and I have the utmost respect for Coach Hilliard. Our student-athletes are very lucky to have him.”

Hilliard is a 1988 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington where he earned a bachelor's degree in business. He is a member of the UMF Athletics Hall of Fame, and currently sits at #3 on the Beavers men’s basketball all-time assist chart.

The Buccaneers start official practice on Monday October 4th, as they prepare to open the 2021-22 season at the Edward Jones Tap-off Classic at New Hampshire Tech on November 5th.
