MassBay Unified Basketball Captures Silver Medal
The MassBay Unified Basketball team wrapped up their inagural season by capturing the Silver Medal in the 2026 Yawkey Basketball League, finishing the year with an impressive 5–1 record.
While the results on the court were strong, the true success of the season went far beyond wins and losses.
Unified Sports, an initiative of Special Olympics, brings together athletes with and without disabilities to compete as teammates. The program emphasizes inclusion, sportsmanship, and the shared experience of competition.
Throughout the season, the MassBay squad embodied those values.
Games were filled with enthusiastic celebrations, constant encouragement from teammates, and a level of sportsmanship that defined the spirit of the league. Whether it was a great pass, a made basket, or simply supporting one another from the bench, every player played an important role in the team’s success.
The chemistry and camaraderie were evident every time the team stepped on the floor. Players celebrated each other’s accomplishments, built friendships, and demonstrated what makes Unified Sports so powerful.
The games at the Yawkey Training Center in Marlborough also highlighted another special part of the season — the incredible support from the MassBay community. Staff members traveled to cheer on the team, creating an electric and welcoming atmosphere. Their presence made the event feel like a true campus celebration and served as a powerful reminder of how athletics can bring a community together.
By the end of the season, the team had not only earned a silver medal, but also created memories and connections that will last well beyond the final buzzer.
For everyone involved, the season was a reminder that the true value of sports lies in teamwork, inclusion, and the joy of playing together.
The Buccaneers game roster included team members: Michael Amendola, Sam Brelus, Patrick Devlin, Jake Nattress, Zach Quigley-Brody, Massimo Reveliotty, Jake Rosenbaum, Dierick Shepard, Cory Williams, Xaivienn Witherspoon. The squad was led by head coach David Lee and student assistant Radley Theolein.
